Scams directed at utility customers actively being investigated

Huntsville Utilities reports there are several scams taking place directed toward HU business customers.

“Over the past couple of days we have received numerous reports that small businesses in the area are now receiving phone calls demanding payment by credit card or the power would be cut,” stated utility spokesman Bill Yell.

HU does contact business customers to discuss past due bills, but only after they reach a specific amount, and they do not demand same-day payment to prevent disconnection.

HU advises customers to always ask for specific information from anyone claiming to represent the company, such as their name and company contact information. Customers are welcome and encouraged to contact HU to verify that information or to report any suspicious contact by individuals claiming to represent HU.

Huntsville Utilities is actively investigating these scams reports with the assistance of local law enforcement agencies to protect all customers.
