How to Pay Your Bill

Huntsville Utilities makes paying your utility bill simple and convenient.
A service fee will be charged for any type remittance returned from any financial institution.

Payment by Bank Draft - A FREE OPTION!

The Bank Draft Program at Huntsville Utilities offers two convenient options for you to choose from: Automatic Monthly Bank Draft and One-Time Web/Phone Draft

Option 1: Automatic Monthly Bank Draft
What is it? The amount due on your bill is automatically drafted from your bank account each month. Automatic Monthly Bank Draft offers great benefits:

  • It’s free!
  • It’s convenient! Never miss paying a bill.
  • No late payments.
  • No late penalties.
  • No hassle writing checks and paying postage.

When are payments drafted?
Bank draft payments are presented for withdrawal one business day prior to your due date. If your due date falls on a weekend or holiday, payments are presented to the bank the prior business day.

What happens when I enroll?
Invoices will be issued and mailed the next business day after your meters are read. The bill will note: “Paid by Bank Draft”

How do I get started?
Log in to My Account to get started.

Option 2: One Time Bank Draft via Website or Automated Phone System

You may initiate a draft at your discretion online by logging into My Account or by automated telephone at 256-535-1200. This option requires that you have your 12-digit Utilities Account Number and PIN number.

How to Enroll Online

You may enroll in the Automatic Bank Draft Program by logging into My Account. This will require you to register as an online user. Once registration is complete, update your current bank information under the Bank Data option. Upon completing the bank information, web/phone draft is immediately available. To activate click “Automatic Monthly Bank Draft”  tab and click “Enroll” to activate.

How To Perform A Web/Phone Draft

(You will need your account number and pin number)

Via My Utilities Online Account
Once online registration and enrollment are complete, log on to your account through My Account.  The View/Pay bill window will open.  Enter the amount you would like to pay then select the payment method you want to use and click Continue.  Once you have verified the payment information click Pay and you will receive a transaction number.

Via the Automated Phone System: 256-535-1200
Call 256-535-1200 to reach the Automated Phone System. You will need your Huntsville Utilities 12-digit account number and your four digit pin number. (Unless otherwise specified, this is the last four digits of the primary account holder’s social security number). Listen for the prompt to pay by “bank draft” and follow the instructions. An additional option has been added where a customer can add their bank information using the Automated Phone System and then go right into processing the payment.  This eliminates the need to enroll prior to using the Automated Phone System to pay by bank draft.

Credit/Debit Card

WESTERN UNION SPEEDPAY SERVICE

  • Accepts Debit Cards (w/the Star, Pulse, Nice or Excel Logo)
  • Accepts Credit Cards (Visa, Discover, American Express and MasterCard)
  • $2.50 convenience fee for each transaction processed
  • $1,000.00 limit per transaction
  • To process a payment you must have your 12 digit Huntsville Utilities Account Number
  • Payments received before 3:00 p.m. will post the same business day. Payments made after 3:00 pm will post the next business day

Payments are accepted by the Western Union’s Speedpay Automated Telephone System at  1-877-429-4131

Log on to My Account to make a one-time payment online

PAY BY TEXT SERVICE

  • You may enroll in Western Union’s Speedpay Pay by Text Service to receive a text message 7 days prior to your invoice due date
  • To submit payment – reply as instructed to the Bill Alert Text message
  • Your full Huntsville Utilities Account balance will Debit – No partial payments accepted
  • To enroll – Log on to My Account online or call Western Union’s Speedpay  Automated Telephone System at 1-877-429-4131
  • A mobile number can only be used for one (1) Huntsville Utilities Account / Cannot sign up multiple accounts with the same mobile number
  • $2.50 convenience fee for each transaction processed, in addition to any charges from your mobile phone provider for text messaging

RECURRING CREDIT CARD SERVICE

  • Invoices paid each month automatically via credit card
  • Credit card charged on invoice due date
  • Only MasterCard, Discover and American Express are eligible for this service
  • Speedpay charges a $2.50 convenience fee per monthly transaction
  • To enroll – Log on to My Account online

Convenience Pay by Western Union

Availability at these locations are subject to change by Western Union.

Payments may be made at Western Union locations participating in Convenience Pay. Simply take your Huntsville Utilities bill or provide your account number to the participating Western Union agent. A $1.00 cash convenience fee will be charged for this service.

If you are subject to cut-off, please do not use this service. Payments will not post to your Huntsville Utilities account until the following business day.

Walmart

Note! If your utilities have already been interrupted or are subject to disconnect in two days or less, payment cannot be made at Walmart.

Payments may be made at local Walmart locations for a minimal service fee.  To make a payment at Walmart you will need:

  • Your 12-digit Huntsville Utilities Account Number(starts with a “2”)
  • Cash, a PIN-based debit/credit card, or a Walmart MoneyCard.

Payment Delivery Options:

  • Standard (delivered within 3 business days) – Fee $1.00
  • Next Day (delivered on the next business day) – Fee: $1.50
  • If subject to disconnect within the next 3 business days – Fee: $1.50

Mail

When paying by mail, always use a check or money order. Never use cash. Write the 12 digit Huntsville Utilities account number on your payment and include the bill stub.

Note! Customers subject to disconnect cannot use drop boxes to avoid being cut off. Two day processing when using drop boxes.

Payments at drop boxes should only be made with check or money order. Do not make payments in cash.

Payment must be in the form of cash, check or money order. Huntsville Utilities does not accept debit or credit cards on-site.

How to Request a Payment Arrangement

The below arrangements are for Residential Customers only. If you require payment arrangements on a Non-Residential account please call 256-535-1200 between the hours of 7am-7pm (Monday-Friday).

ANY BILL NOT PAID IN FULL BY THE PAY GROSS AFTER DATE INCLUDE A LATE PENALTY.

Short-Term Agreement

This agreement allows the customer to extend payment of their current invoice for a maximum period of 12 days past the pay gross after date. To take advantage of this option, please call our automated phone system, 7 days a week, at 256-535-1200. You will need your 12-digit customer account number and pin number.

Permanent Agreement

This deferred payment option allows the customer to establish a permanent agreement date using the same criteria outlined under Short –Term Agreements. Customers electing to use this option will have the security of knowing their payment date has been extended without the need to contact our office each month. For additional information, you may contact our Customer Information Center from 7:00am-7:00pm, Monday-Friday at 256-535-1200, or visit our office during normal working hours.

If payment not received by the deferred due date and services are disconnected this agreement is void and all future invoices are due upon receipt unless other arrangements are made by the customer.

Long-Term Agreement

This payment option allows the customer to maintain utility service while paying one-half of the past due amount. The remaining balance will be included on the next current invoice and must be paid in full when it becomes due. No other arrangements can be made until the account is paid to a zero balance.  To discuss this payment option, contact our Customer Information Center from 7:00am-7:00pm, Monday-Friday at 256-535-1200 or visit our office during normal working hours.

Installment Plan

This payment option allows the customer to enter into a written agreement to keep service on while paying an agreed upon portion of the past due amount, along with any new utility bills as they become due. However, when a customer signs an Installment Plan, they waive the right to any review concerning the validity of the bill and no other arrangements can be made until the account is paid to a zero balance. To take advantage of this option, the customer must come into the office to sign the installment plan during normal office hours.

Restoring Interrupted Service

If interruption of service occurs, notification in the form of a door hanger is placed at the service location. Instructions are provided in order to address the restoration of service promptly. (Note: Payment in Person and by Speedpay are the quickest ways to restore service.)

If power has been interrupted:

  1. A door hanger is normally placed on the front entrance of a location; verify other entrances at the service location.
  2. The door hanger will indicate the reason and the amount needed to restore service.
  3. Payments can be made to reconnect service in person, at a payment center or by using a credit/debit card through Speedpay and Online. Western Union’s Speedpay Automated Telephone System can be reached at  1-877-429-4131.
  4. For additional information, contact our office at 256-535-1200.  Additional charges will apply for restoration of services after normal business hours. After hour charges will apply after 6pm, weekends and/or holidays.
