Huntsville Utilities Announces New Green Power Program

Huntsville Utilities customers can now generate their own power and sell it back to TVA under a program to be offered to Madison County residents and businesses.

Huntsville Utilities and thirty-nine other participating distributors of TVA power are now offering Green Power Switch - Generation Partners™. The program features a dual metering option in which all generated green power is purchased by TVA and credited to each participant's electric bill. TVA will use the green power produced as a Green Power Switch Program resource.

Qualifying generation sources for the residential program are photovoltaic and wind turbine systems with a minimum output of 500 watts of alternating current and a maximum of 50 kilowatts. Commercial generation sources are restricted to photovoltaic systems only. Qualifying systems must be used primarily to provide all or part of the energy needs at a particular site. Installations must also comply with local codes and adhere to specific interface guidelines established by the program.

Participants must sign a 10-year agreement to supply the supplemental energy. TVA currently pays 15 cents per kilowatt-hour for solar or wind energy generated by residential and small commercial customers. A payment of 20 cents per kWh is paid to large commercial customers for solar generation.

Becoming a Generation Partner is a big commitment. Electric rates are low in Madison County and solar equipment costs are high, therefore, equipment payback costs may take 20 years or more to recoup through power bill credits.
