Huntsville Utilities Statement concerning Widows Creek Steam Plant Spill News Conference Statement

January 9, 2009

Huntsville Utilities was notified this morning by TVA of a spill at the Widows Creek Steam Plant in Jackson County.

TVA stated that some of the material did spill into Widows Creek which is a tributary of the Tennessee River.

We are not able to discuss any specifics related to the issues at the TVA plant.

We have been in contact with TVA staff, Alabama Department of Environmental Management and regional Emergency Management Agencies and we feel sure that the water supply for our customers is safe at this point.

Our staff will monitor the water quality in the river and make appropriate adjustments in the treatment processes as the water quality warrants.

Based on the information we have now, we do not expect to see any changes in water quality associated with this incident.

Huntsville Utilities has two surface water treatment plants on the Tennessee River which are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are continuously monitored.

Our top goal for our water system is to produce quality water that will allow our customers to have safe water to drink and use.

Huntsville Utilities is a publicly owned not for profit utility with approximately 83,000 water customers in Huntsville and Madison County.
